VSM instrument
VSM instrument is a vibrating sample magnetometer resource for experimental characterization of magnetic properties of metals, alloys, thin films, nanostructured materials and functional magnetic materials. The instrument is used to measure the magnetic response of a sample in an applied magnetic field and to obtain magnetization curves, hysteresis loops and quantitative magnetic parameters. The resource is linked to the IMP Core Facilities for Metal Physics and Nanomaterials and corresponds to the VSM Centre based on the “Vibrating Magnetometer 7404 VSM” at the G. V. Kurdyumov Institute for Metal Physics of NAS of Ukraine. It supports research in metal physics, magnetic materials, functional alloys, nanomaterials and materials with field-dependent magnetic behaviour.

Technical notes
The VSM instrument measures the magnetic moment of a sample by detecting the signal induced when the sample vibrates in a magnetic field. A typical measurement can include field-dependent magnetization, magnetic hysteresis, comparison of different sample states, and analysis of magnetic response under selected experimental conditions. According to the public IMP VSM Centre description, the 7404 VSM instrument is used for studying magnetic properties of samples over a wide temperature range of 80–1273 K. The exact measurement configuration, sample geometry, field range, temperature regime and data-processing procedure should be agreed with the responsible facility team before the measurement. The resource should not be treated as a fully automatic self-service instrument. Measurement quality depends on sample preparation, mass, geometry, magnetic moment, orientation, thermal stability and the selected measurement protocol.
Data outputs
Typical data outputs include magnetization curves, magnetic hysteresis loops, magnetic moment data, field-dependent magnetic response, temperature-dependent magnetic response where applicable, coercive field, remanent magnetization, saturation magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and processed magnetic characterization plots. The output package may include raw measurement files, processed data tables, graphical plots, sample and measurement metadata, and a short technical report describing the measurement conditions and extracted magnetic parameters. Data can be prepared in reusable formats such as CSV, TXT or XLSX, with plots in PDF, PNG or SVG format where needed.
